Hillwalking

Views from the hills are unhampered and majestic

The eastern reaches of the district are very hilly and there are a number of marked trails providing excellent hillwalking. The hills are not too high – the highest is only 850 metres – but they are so close to the fjord that the views from the tops are unhampered and majestic. You can choose Høglikampen, Lyshornet, Liafjellet or Borgafjellet, which are all easy walks. Those looking for something more challenging might choose Rødsfjellet and Møsnuken. And the really fit should try Svinningen, preferably a round-trip so that you walk up through Øvredalen and down again to Midtsæter, or vice versa. The

Liafjellet

An easy hill to climb. The terrain is forested and has marked trails, signposts and benches should you need a rest. Excellent views toward Hagavik, Austevoll, Tysnes and Fusa. 259 metres above sea level Time: 1-3 hours

Os Walking Association

Has released maps that show all of the marked trails, and has printed a new map book of Os in the summer of 2004. In her book, “På mjuke stiar og flotte fjell i Os” Gudrun Heggland writes about various routes and experiences for walking enthusiasts. There is an English summary of the routes.
